Educational Philosophy
At Little Turtles Academy, we see children as competent, capable, and curious learners who are rich in potential and deserving of respect. We believe children learn best when they are actively engaged in meaningful experiences that invite them to explore, discover, create and make connections with the world around them.
Our educational philosophy is guided by Indigenous worldviews, including the teachings of the Four Directions. These teachings remind us to nurture the whole child: spiritually, emotionally, physically and mentally. Through caring relationships, hands-on learning, cultural connection and time spent with nature, we support each child’s growth in a balanced and meaningful way.
Infant Program
12 - 18 Months
Our Infant program provides a warm, nurturing and culturally grounded environment where infant children feel safe, loved and connected. As an Indigenous-led childcare centre, we honour infants as capable, curious learners who begin building relationships with people, language, culture and nature - from the very beginning.
The Infant program includes sensory play, music, language, songs and quiet activities that encourage early communication, curiosity and joyful discovery. Indigenous language and cultural connections are woven naturally into the day through songs, storytelling, caregiving moments and time spent outdoors.
Toddler Program
18 to 36 Months
Our Toddler program focuses on nurturing children’s growing independence - while helping them build confidence, connection and a strong sense of belonging. We value toddlers as capable, curious learners who are eager to explore, communicate, move, create and build relationships with others.
Toddlers begin their morning with a music and movement circle that encourages rhythm, expression, community and joyful participation. Outdoor time including walks, allow toddlers to connect with nature, observe the world around them and develop respect for the land. Storytelling, music, arts, bead work-inspired trays, sensory experiences and invitations to play - are woven throughout the day to support language development, creativity, fine motor skills and cultural learning. With gentle guidance from educators, toddlers practice sharing, problem-solving, expressing emotions and caring for themselves and others.
Preschool Program
36 - 48 Months
Our Preschool program is designed to help children build a strong foundation for lifelong learning while continuing to feel supported, confident and connected. At this stage, children are ready for new challenges, deeper exploration and more opportunities to practise the skills that will help them transition successfully into elementary school.
Daily circle time supports early literacy, listening skills, language development, storytelling and group participation. Through learning centres and project-based learning, preschoolers engage in hands-on activities that encourage problem-solving, cooperation, independence and deeper thinking. Children are gently challenged through activities that build early skills in language, science, math, art and self-regulation.
